Building on the Dream

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. dreamed of a world where all peoples and nations would triumph over poverty, racism, war and violence.

We at Habitat for Humanity dream of a world where everyone lives in safe, decent and affordable housing.  Habitat builds homes with people in need irrespective of race, creed, national origin or religion.

This fifth annual Building on the Dream is an initiative that honors Martin Luther King, Jr. and works to fulfill both dreams.  This year Habitat Jackson and diverse religious and community leaders are partnering together to help triumph over violence by bringing together Christians, Muslims, Jews, and other religions to build the Building on the Dream Peace House.

The Kickoff and Groundbreaking Celebration on Martin Luther King Day, January 15, was a special gathering of religious and community leaders to bless the site of the future Patricia Coleman family home and celebrate the cooperative created by this project.

Construction on the Peace House at 520 West Porter Street in Mid City/Georgetown began on May 5, 2007, and the home is soon to be inhabited by Patricia Coleman and her family.

Please consider the role you and your group or organization can play in joining with others in our community to make dreams of prosperity and peace come true.

Building on the Dream

“Everybody can be great . . . because anybody can serve.
You don’t have to have a college degree to serve.
You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve.
You only need a heart full of grace.  A soul generated by love.”
-- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
