Common Questions
If it rains, we'll all be in it together!
Do I have to have construction experience to participate?
No, no construction experience is required. We need volunteers committed to working with a willingness to learn. But skilled volunteers are also welcome on the site. Please indicate any special skills when filling out a volunteer form.
Can I complete community service hours by volunteering for Habitat?
Yes. Becoming a regular volunteer is a great way to fulfill any community service hour requirements you have. Construction volunteers work 8 hour shifts, and there are always volunteer opportunities in our affiliate's office.
Can I volunteer if I'm under the age of 16?
You cannot participate in construction projects if you are under the age of 16, but there are many other volunteer projects available: landscaping, office projects, fundraising, and events.
When can I volunteer?
Regular construction volunteers work on Saturdays from 8:00am to 4:30pm. Often opportunities are available for skilled construction volunteers during the week, in the HFH/MJ office during the week, or fundraising event, but you must call 601-353-6060, x202 to inquire about such volunteer opportunities.
Where are Habitat houses built?
Habitat houses are built in downtown Jackson neighborhoods. Maps are available on the Nehemiah Project page. Also, once a year we build one home in Rankin County and one home in the City of Clinton.
Can I only volunteer for house construction?
HFH/MJ has many volunteer opportunities other than house construction. We frequently have events and fundraisers that need organizing and staffing. We also have landscaping projects for HFH/MJ homes, a full-time cabinet shop that needs skilled volunteers, and other various projects in the HFH/MJ office that are a great way to volunteer your time.
