Covenant Sponsorship
The Habitat for Humanity/ Metro Jackson (HFH/MJ) covenant program invites churches, companies, civic clubs, schools, other groups and individuals to join with Habitat in a practical hands-on partnership-a covenant- to make the dream of decent shelter a reality for a family in the Metro Jackson area by helping build that family a home.
HFH/MJ houses are built using Habitat's proven partnership model. More than 200 groups have teamed up with HFH/MJ to build over 465 homes in the metro area. For Each Home:
HFH/MJ selects the homeowner, buys the land, designs the house, obtains building permits, supplies all necessary tools and materials, provides skilled construction supervision, and is responsible for the construction of the house.
The "Covenant Sponsor" provides the funding for the project and recruits and organizes its own volunteers to build the house (no skill needed). HFH/MJ has volunteer resources and can supplement groups, as needed. When the covenant financial commitment is made by groups or individuals with little or no volunteer pool, HFH/MJ will recruit and organize the volunteers for building.
HFH/MJ leads volunteers through an 8 to 10 week construction process, which includes a work schedule, training, and insurance. It only takes $56,000 to sponsor a HFH/MJ Home:
HFH/MJ's full covenant sponsor is $56,000 which includes a $2,000 tithe to an underdeveloped country. Though actual cost is more, HFH/MJ adds in-kind donations and other subsidies to keep the cost down.
Groups may join together, pooling funds and volunteers for building.
Every house is built as a partnership (a covenant) between HFH/MJ and one or more covenant sponsors from this community. A covenant with HFH/MJ is also a partnership with the family who will purchase and live in the house. The family will work alongside the sponsor's volunteers, helping with construction. We will build with, not for, the family. HFH/MJ offers a self-help, sweat equity program that fosters dignity and self-respect, along with the pride and opportunity of home ownership. Through your covenant, you extend your hand in friendship to the HFH/MJ family, enabling them, through your gifts of time, energy, and funds, to obtain the stability and security brought by ownership of a decent home. |
