Habitat for Humanity/Metro Jackson (HFH/MJ) wants to uncover more strategic and effective remedies for safety problems as part of our strategic vision is to create sustainable communities. To that end, HFH/MJ has established a Jackson Community Safety Initiative (JCSI), a formal collaboration with Jackson Police Department (JPD) initiated in late 2009, as a way to strategically build public safety and strengthen neighborhoods.

The overarching goal for the initiative is to integrate the resources of people and institutions which influence crime and perceptions in the neighborhood.  JCSI is expanding the partnership with JPD to establish and pursue shared public safety and revitalization.

The initiative also seeks to integrate economic development and public safety efforts through "building out of crime" strategies and build positive community-police relationships. This is achieved through organizing partnerships with faith-based entities, development groups, civic organizations, community development corporations (CDCs) and neighborhood associations.

Funded for 2009/2010 by a grant from the Department of Justice and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), HFH/MJ has hired a Safety Coordinator/Organizer to lead collaborative efforts between JPD and HFH/MJ. The Safety Coordinator/ Organizer serves as a liaison between residents, community-based organizations, developers and police/prosecutors.
