Why Habitat?
Since 1986, Habitat for Humanity/Metro Jackson has built 500 houses in partnership with low-income families in need. Our Preservation Program has provided low-cost home repair for more than 50 families, and provided resources to reduce energy consumption through weatherization for over 100 families. We are determined to eliminate poverty housing from Metro Jackson, building on a history of success. In the past 25 years we’ve seen that: Our model works for families. We combine education, screening for homeownership readiness and affordable, zero-interest mortgages. This intensive work means that families have the right combination of skills and financial tools to be successful homeowners. Our model works for communities. We help ensure stable homeownership in challenged neighborhoods throughout the metro area. We effectively eliminate blight and abandoned homes, a drain on the city’s resources and replace them with decent, affordable homes. As the homes are sold to a low-income first time homebuyer, the property is reclaimed on the city’s tax tolls. The work of HFH/MJ generates 40 FTE additional jobs in the local economy each year; and for every $1.00 used in building a decent, affordable home, $1.70 is generated into the local community.
Our model brings people together. No other organization joins volunteers and donors from congregations, corporations and other nonprofits to create a solution that everyone has a hand in. |
